The Flint Water Crisis is one of the most serious issues to ever affect the people of Michigan on such a large scale. Over 8,000 children have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead, and about 5 percent test as having high levels of lead in their blood.
Lead poisoning affects the development of children's brains and nervous systems in irreversible ways. These children may experience a range of serious health problems, including kidney problems, fatigue, lethargy, depression, and slower reaction time.
Of course, one of the first responses to the crisis has been donation of water and water filters, however, even after this crisis has been resolved (which will likely take years), its effects on the residents of Flint will be immeasurable, and last for generations.
It is because of this long-term concern that MI RootsWear is proud to partner with the Flint Child Health & Development Fund. The FCHDF knows the needs of Flint children exposed to lead, particularly those most vulnerable - children ages 0-6 - are ongoing and long-term. When you make a donation to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund, you can be assured that your gift will be used for critical interventions today and well into the future.
“If there was ever a time to invest in our children, it is now. Our Flint children deserve every opportunity to be healthy and successful. The creation of this Fund will further ensure that our children are afforded the resources and interventions to overcome this population-wide exposure to lead.”
